I did it my way

The challenge went out to prepare for the half marathon in thirteen weeks. Undeterred by our starting fitness levels, the short time frame, the weather and the lack of hills in Melbourne we each devised our own plan......

LIZ

Relying on her professional medical training Liz signed up for the proven training program: "Couch to Half Marathon in 14 weeks". (Here's the link
http://womensrunning.competitor.com/2013/09/training-tips/couch-to-half-marathon-training-plan_15065). Liz we were very taken with the rigour of this programme, especially after we saw it widely advertised in that famous medical journal Who Weekly.

Here's Liz looking pretty in pink and purple. In her own words: "Any picture of me in green and yellow should not be widely distributed." Liz get over it - the team t shirt is green and gold! (for beautifully modelled team shirt check out the headless model in post 1)

Remaining challenge: to see as much of China as possible in the 72 hours she will be there with us.

Liz's friend Zoe has also signed up for the Great Wall adventure and we are thrilled she will be joining us. Here's Zoe on the left with her daughter Anna.

KYLIE

So before Kylie agreed to sign up for this trip she went for a quick 12 km run around the Tan track to check on her fitness levels. Twenty minutes later she said "yep I'll be fine!" Not only does Kylie look great in the team colours, she has shorts that co-ordinate (did you guess correctly in post 1) and those legs are full of serious can-do attitude. Melbourne may have great gardens and trams, but it is sorely lacking as a training venue for the Great wall Half Marathon. Kylie is running out of frequent flyer points as she has used them up dashing to Sydney to train on steps at Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

Remaining challenge:  Kylie's mantra is that every opportunity is a marketing one for the rugby union team managed by husband Rob.  Kylie, sorry girl, there will be no brand promotion on this blog of the nameless Victorian based team!

LOUISE

Louise only read the part of the race guide about the 2500+ stairs and here she is training on the steps at the Waverton Navy base.  It's a pity her training program has not included any actual running. Unfortunately, after the first 8 kms walk and stairs Louise is expected to step down off the Great Wall and run the remaining 12kms through local villages. The problem is that Louise, with her love of crafts, may never finish the 21kms, as she will be admiring local handicrafts and will end up learning silk weaving. Louise, the last bus leaves after 8 hours and the rest of us will be sporting our medals and will have scoffed all the dumplings at yum cha at the finish line!

Remaining challenge: Louise, decide if you are an 8kms fun run participant and cultural exchange student or a 21kms half marathoner.

BRIONY

As the pioneer of this whole caper, Briony was determined to actually prepare herself for the full 21kms. Her frantic schedule however has forced her to train in all weathers and in all situations. This photo shows her recovery from a speculative 10 km run in the pouring rain. Briony also famously included a one off effort at 1600 stairs in the fire stairs at her local gym: "I thought I needed to see how we would feel after the race and girls it's not good!" Surely running around after all those high spirited school girls will provide dividends at the 15 km mark.

Remaining challenge: to show some flesh! Briony has actually suggested that her running outfit will resemble a burka. Come on girl - get it off!!

4 days to go......
